About the Île-de-France Raw Earth Collective

The Île-de-France Raw Earth Collective is a non-profit association that promotes the use of raw earth as a building material throughout the Île-de-France region. It works to strengthen and structure the sector while contributing to the transmission of knowledge, skills, and building cultures related to raw-earth construction.
At the national level, the Collective is actively involved in the sector as a member of both the Confédération Terre Crue and the Projet National Terre. Since its creation in 2021, it has organized numerous events, including study days, exhibitions, conferences, feedback sessions, and publications, with the aim of collectively developing the geo-based and bio-based construction sector alongside all stakeholders in the building industry.
In partnership with 2 Microns, this practical workshop was created for ARCHITECT@WORK Paris to raise awareness among construction professionals of the wide-ranging potential of these geo-sourced building materials. The workshop highlights their resilience, their suitability in addressing climate challenges, and the specific techniques required for their successful application.

About the Association Construire en Chanvre

For more than 20 years, the Association Construire en Chanvre (Building with Hemp Association) has been working to secure and promote hemp construction practices while supporting the stakeholders involved in the sector. Hemp concrete, a mixture of a binder and hemp shiv (the woody core of the hemp stalk), is a remarkable building material that celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2016. In 1986, the first house renovation using hemp concrete was carried out. In 1989, hemp concrete was presented for the first time at Batimat, one of the leading international construction trade fairs. During the early 1990s, construction professionals from various regions of France conducted numerous trials and experiments. Architects, project managers, contractors, and manufacturers of binders (lime) and hemp shiv came together to share their experiences and establish common technical practices. Since its founding in 1998, Construire en Chanvre has worked to make hemp construction a reliable and insurable building method. This effort has involved the development of a regulatory and standards-based framework, enabling construction professionals to build with hemp while benefiting from appropriate insurance coverage. Today, the association continues its work by developing and producing essential reference publications, technical guides, and best-practice documents that support the design and construction of hemp-based buildings.
